This course is an introduction to the life of Dante Alighieri and his masterpiece that has been inspiring any kind of artist for over seven centuries: the Divine Comedy. The course is organized through readings from the original Italian version of the Inferno, followed by a thorough commentary aiming to contextualize the poem in the culture of Italian Middle-Ages and to give account for the references to Dante’s times and society.

Dante and his poem – from 18th June to 30th June
18th June: Introduction to Dante (Life, Education, Poetry, Relationship with Florence, Political Ideas, Exile, and Death); Introduction to the Divine Comedy; reading and explanation of Canto I;
19th June: reading and explanation of Cantos II, III;
23rd June: reading and explanation of Cantos V, VI;
25th June: reading and explanation of Cantos X, XIII;
26th June: reading and explanation of Cantos XXVI, XXXII;
30th June: reading and explanation of Cantos XXXIII, XXXIV.
